EMCO’s Greatest Hits: 3 of our Favourite Projects

EMCO’s Greatest Hits: 3 of our Favourite Projects

14 Aug 2018

At EMCO we do a lot of really varied and interesting work. We love the challenge of designing and constructing fantastic buildings for a wide range of different clients and are always looking at ways of pushing the envelope and delivering something that really makes a statement.

With this blog we thought we’d share some of our greatest hits. These are the projects that we’re most proud of and that we think best showcase our outstanding commercial building capabilities.

The Bottleyard On Palmerston

It’s not everyday that we get to work on a site that has some really interesting history attached to it, but that’s what we encountered with the Bottleyard On Palmerston. Situated in a great location close to Northbridge and the CBD, this fantastic apartment complex sits on grounds that were formerly a market garden and then a bottle factory. This unique history provided some great inspiration for elements that we were able to incorporate into the design.

During the site excavation works, bottles dating as far back as 1912 were unearthed and some are now on display in the WA museum. Broken bottle shards were also saved and have been turned into beautiful artworks throughout the complex. As a nod to the former market garden, we also incorporated a Central Urban Garden providing a communal space with herbs and vegetables for all residents to enjoy.

Challenger Institute TAFE Murdoch

Challenger Institute TAFE Murdoch

The reason this falls into our top three is because of the large variety of areas involved with this build. The 3 storey construction of the Trade Training Centre involved everything from activity areas including the main foyer, café, a large library, gymnasium and the central stairs to the training areas which involved reception, beauty, hair and massage sections. We’re also proud to say that the Challenger TAFE build won the Best Educational Building Award in the $20-$50m category at the MBA Excellence in Construction Awards in July 2018.

One of the key aspects of the build was the large core service areas, without which the building wouldn’t perform the way it’s meant to. These areas included service stair, cupboards, stores plus passenger and goods lifts, ancillary facilities comprising of toilets, showers, kitchen, café and even bicycle storage in order to accommodate any worker. We really enjoyed working on all the different aspects of Challenger Tafe and we thrive on ensuring that all the details of any build are thought through and implemented extremely well.

St Mary’s Cathedral

St Mary's Cathedral

When you’re in the building and renovation game, Cathedral projects don’t come along every day. That’s why we were so excited to win the contract to renovate the existing building and construct some major new additions. One of the most complex heritage builds that Perth has ever seen, this amazing project involved lots of specialist works, including some that had not been previously attempted.

Our first challenge was to restore the glorious old building in a way that highlighted its historic beauty. We then also had to construct a new section that blended in with the older structure. This was definitely one of our most challenging projects to date, but the results were fantastic and the whole team has been extremely proud of what we’ve achieved.

EMCO & Your Next Project

No matter what the project, we’re always looking to push the envelope and achieve something truly remarkable for our clients. It’s what sets us apart from other commercial builders in town.
