WA Ecology Centre, Bold Park
The building, located in the environmentally sensitive area of Bold Park, reflects the local environment. In addition to the main building there is also a vehicle depot and wash down facility.
The original intent of the design was to produce a ‘rustic’ building, although the finished structure was highly complex with a multitude of exposed connection details and finishes not normally seen. The administration and management of this project was complex as EMCO had to resolve many of the details to ensure the clients expectations could be met.
At Tender stage prices submitted were well above budget. EMCO worked with the Architect to develop alternatives and cost savings to achieve the exact budget whilst maintaining the intent of the building. This process, whilst not unusual carries risks, particularily where a party fails to fully appreciate what is necessary to achieve significant savings and progress the process in an open and pro-active manner. EMCO’s experience with these types of negotiations allowed the client to achieve a significant building for a very keen price whilst not having to sacrifice the aesthetics or floor area.
